President Barack Obama has spared two turkeys from the brine and the oven, fulfilling the annual tradition of a presidential pardon for a couple of lucky birds ahead of Thanksgiving Day.
Obama pardoned Popcorn, who shared the stage with the president on the North Portico of the White House on a cold drizzly day. An alternate turkey, named Caramel, also received a pardon, though it did not have the benefit of a face-to-beak meeting with the president. Smile

A series of classic, black-and-white images have captured American families celebrating Thanksgiving more than 50 years ago.
The retro photographs paint a picture of domestic bliss as housewives baste turkeys, children dress in pilgrim costumes and the in-laws gather around the dinner table.
Family and friends across the country are gearing up for turkey day which has been celebrated on the last Thursday in November since the 19th century.
Many gather to enjoy a traditional meal of roast turkey with side dishes of yams, green bean casserole and stuffing.
Thanksgiving is usually spent overindulging in food, watching football games and enjoying the three-hour Macy's parade in Manhattan.

Father and son look on as mother bastes the turkey during a traditional Thanksgiving dinner
