| As of 1978, Spain has been a Parlimentary System with a Constitutional Monarchy. This is similar to the system in Great Britain. The King is the head of the state and as such, represents Spain internationally. The Spanish Constitution limits the authority of the King (and all future Monarchs) to mostly ceremonial powers. The King has the authority to propose candidates to serve as head of governments, but his proposal's must be approved by the Parliament. King Juan Carlos I is the current ruler of Spain. He was born on January 5, 1938 in Rome. His grandfather, Alphonso XIII, had given up the throne of Spain and moved the entire Royal family to Rome. In 1948 Juan Carlos returned to Spain to begin his education. In 1955 he began his studies at the military academies of the Navy, Army and Air Force. He eventually qualified as a military pilot. On May 14, 1962, in Athens he married Princess Sofía of Greece. In 1969 he was designated to be the next Head of State. On November 22, 1975, he was proclaimed King of Spain. In his first speech to the people of Spain he told them that he wished to restore democracy. On May 1977 his father, who was never King, transferred to Juan Carlos all rights to the throne. One month later the first democratic elections since 1936 were held. On December 6th, 1978, the current constitution, which defined the role of the King, was adopted. In the last 20 years the King has become a very influential world figure. He is a major reason that Spain has once again assumed an important role in world affairs. | |

| Queen Sofía was born in Athens on November 2, 1938. She was the first daugher of King Paul I of Greece, Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark. Her family was forced to flee Greece during World War II. Princess Sophia spent some of her childhood in Egypt where she took her early education in El Nasr Girls' College (EGC) in Alexandria, then went to South Africa during her family's exile from Greece during World War II. They returned to Greece in 1946. On 14 May 1962 Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark married Infante Juan Carlos of Spain, whom she met on a cruise of the Greek Islands in 1954, in Athens at the Church of Saint Dennis. In doing so, she relinquished her rights to the throne of Greece and converted to Roman Catholicism from Greek Orthodoxy, an act of convenience in order to become more palatable to Catholic Spain. Further, the Latin transliteration of her Greek name (Σοφία), was changed from Sophia to the Spanish variant Sofía, which nonetheless is pronounced identically to the original Greek version. Sofia was able to bring a cool realism to the marriage and shifted Juan Carlos from the sphere of influence of his father Don Juan to a more realistic rapprochement with Franco. In 1969, Prince Juan Carlos, who was never Prince of Asturias, the traditional title of the heir to the throne, was given the official title of Prince of Spain by the Spanish state; this was a title suggested by Sofia herself. Juan Carlos acceded to the throne as Juan Carlos I in 1975. The couple have three children: HRH Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo born 20 December 1963, HRH Infanta Cristina, Duchess of Palma de Mallorca born 13 June 1965, and HRH Felipe, Prince of Asturias born 30 January 1968. | |

| Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo (Elena María Isabel Dominica de Silos de Borbón y de Grecia; born 20 December 1963, Madrid), MA (Exon), is the elder daughter of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía of Spain, and fourth in the line of succession to the Spanish throne. She married Jaime de Marichalar y Sáenz de Tejada, son of the Count and Countess of Ripalda, on 18 March 1995, in Seville Cathedral, Seville, at which time her father conferred on her the title Duchess of Lugo for life. They have two children: His Excellency Felipe Juan Froilán de Todos los Santos de Marichalar y de Borbón, Grandee of Spain (Grande de España) (born 17 July 1998) Her Excellency Victoria Federica de Todos los Santos de Marichalar y de Borbón, Grandee of Spain (Grande de España) (born 9 September 2000) On 13 November 2007, it was announced that the Infanta had separated from her husband. In November 2009, the Spanish media said that Infanta Elena and Jaime de Marichalar would divorce, although a rumour to that effect had been circulating for a year before the announcement was made. Their divorce papers were signed on 25 November 2009. The Duchess and Duke of Lugo were divorced in December 2009. On 21 January 2010 the divorce was registered at the Civil Registry of the Spanish Royal Family. It was officially announced on 9 February 2010 that Jaime de Marichalar was no longer permitted to use the ducal title and that he was no longer considered to be an official member of the Spanish Royal Family. | |
