| I'm not sure it's the right forum for this post but at least it's something to do with culture. "Balle, Balle – a Hindu term meaning hooray! hooray!" http://www.bhangrafitness.com/glossary.html (btw also from there: "Bhangra –a Hindu word for hemp" (!)) "Vocals included not only pastoral poems, but also nonsensical phrases like “hey hey hey,” “balle-balle” and “hey arippa.”" http://www.ghungroodance.com/balle-balle.htm To listen: http://www.dalermehndi.com/html/album6.shtml To see: http://www.dhawans.com/shows2003/balle.htm | |

| Bhangra is an exuberant folk dance from Punjab and is normally accompanied by energetic singing drum beating. Though traditionally performed during the crop harvest season in mid-April (called Baisakhi), it is nowadays a common feature at most Indian wedding ceremonies and other social occasions. This dance is performed by farmers in anticipation and then again as a celebration of a good harvest season. The dance starts on a slow tempo, with the song being sung by a leader to set the rhythm. The drummer at the center sets the pace and as each couplet ends, the rhythm quickens and the dancers are inspired to perform various acrobatic feats. Two pipers and a chimtawala accompany the big drum. The chimta is a very long pair of iron tongs with metal disks. The chimtawala dances as he sounds the tongs. Colorful clothes comprised of the flowing turbans, chadra (covering for the lower body) and long kurtas (shirts) and waistcoats make this a very attractive dance to watch. http://www.dollsofindia.com/product/KF12/ | |
