Diwali in India Empty
PostSubject: Diwali in India   Diwali in India EmptyFri Nov 21, 2008 1:35 pm

I'd like to show you some pictures that I took during Diwali festival this year. As I live in Gurgaon, I'll show you some Gurgaon's views Smile

As you might know, Diwali is celebrated during 5 days. Diwali itself is celebrated on the new moon night of the Karttik month according to the Hindu calender. The day that comes two days before Diwali is called Dhanteras. It is believed that Lakshmi and the God of Ayurveda Dhanvantari came out of the Milk ocean during churning by surs (gods) and asurs (demons). On this day people buy some steel utensiles and a silver coin to use it then in Lakshmi puja on Diwali.

The next day is called Narak Chaturdashi. It is believed that Bhagwan Krishna killed the demon Narakasur. This day is also called Chhoti Diwali which means little Diwali. People light up diyas (little earthen lamps), mostly near the entrance gates and decorate their houses with bulb garlands Smile That's how it looked like in our neighbourhood:

Look at these footprints made with the rangoli powder. I am not sure, but I guess they are made for greeting Lakshmi, so that she could walk inside stepping onto those footprints Smile This is my guess, I hope Neel could help us out Smile

Diwali in India 9k=
November 14, 2020 Decorating for Diwali
During Diwali, the five-day festival of lights, vibrant patterns of all shapes and sizes are created on the floor out of materials such as colored rice, sand, and flower petals. The charming Indian folk art, called rangoli, is usually made near the entrance of a home to welcome guests and deities, and is said to bring good luck on special occasions. Celebrations might be a bit different this year, but buildings will still be brightened by these decorative drawings, twinkling lights, and small oil lamps, known as diyas.

Diwali, which means 'row of lights' in the ancient language of Sanskrit, is commemorated every fall by millions of Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and some Buddhists in India and across the world. Each religion marks different historical events and stories, but what they all have in common is the concept of new beginnings, the triumph of good over evil, and the victory of light over darkness. Today marks the third day of Diwali, when festivities reach their peak.
