The Larabanga mosque has a history dating back to thirteenth century (although some experts argue that the mosque could date from a later period, possibly the fifteenth century), and is believed to have been built by moors that traveled from North Africa & Arabia as traders. It is of ancient mud & stick structure, and whitewashed, with a large Baobab tree growing immediately alongside. The exterior seems to change in colour tone throughout the day, giving tones that vary from white to a golden tan appearance. Its distinctive façade is a common backdrop for Ghana-related topics, often featuring on the cover of tourist guides, and is commonly referenced on the internet.

The mosque has four entrances, one each for the village chief, men, women, and the muezzin, who leads the adhan (call to prayer). A copy of the Qur'an (Koran) dating from the seventeenth century, which belonged to Imam Bramah, is located inside, which is almost as old as the mosque itself. While most mosques are generally closed to non-muslims, visitors have reported, on occasion, to be allowed entry to Larabanga mosque, however, this is by no means guaranteed, and entry is permitted at the discretion of the local villagers.

St Catherine's Chapel, Abbotsbury, Dorset

St Catherine’s Chapel is a small chapel situated above the village of Abbotsbury in Dorset, England. It is thought to have been built in about 1400 as a Pilgrim chapel for Abbotsbury Abbey. Its position on the top of a hill about 80 m (260 ft) high, overlooking the coast means that it was a prominent feature for seafarers. The medieval strip lynchets etched into the side of the hill are known locally as the Chapel Rings. I liked the effect almost duplicated in the clouds. The chapel appears briefly in the Powell and Pressburger film, The Small Back Room. St Catherine’s Chapel has a local tradition of ‘wishing’. This involves using the niches in the chapel walls to ‘post’ prayers to the saint asking for her help. This tradition still goes on today.
