| Perched atop 85 metres high pointed rocky peak of a volcanic plug in the French commune of Aiguilhe (meaning needle) near Le Puy-en-Velay is one of the architectural gems of France - a small chapel - The Chapel of Saint Michel d'Aiguilhe. The top of the peak is about 34 metres by 13 metres only. The volcanic plug is estimated to be more than a million years old. | |

| Built in 962, the chapel is reached by steep winding stairs having 268 steps carved into the rock. There is barely any free space at the top and its construction is a remarkable piece of workmanship. | |

| It was built to celebrate the return of Bishop of Le Puy from a pilgrimage of St. James. A Roman temple dedicated to Mercury reportedly existed at the rocky peak prior to construction of the chapel. | |

| The Washington National Cathedral, officially named the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, is a cathedral of the Episcopal Church located in Washington, D.C. Of neogothic design, it is the sixth largest cathedral in the world, the second largest in the United States, and the fourth tallest structure in Washington, D.C. The cathedral is the seat of both the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, currently Katharine Jefferts Schori, and the Bishop of the Diocese of Washington, currently John Bryson Chane. In 2009, nearly 400,000 visitors toured the structure. The congregation numbers 800. The Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation, under the leadership of the first seven consecutive Bishops of Washington, erected the cathedral under a charter passed by the United States Congress on January 6, 1893. Construction began on September 29, 1907, when the foundation stone was laid in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt and a crowd of more than 20,000, and ended 83 years later when the last finial was placed in the presence of President George H. W. Bush in 1990. (New decorative work such as carvings and statuary, is still ongoing.) | |

| Berlin Cathedral (German: Berliner Dom) is the colloquial name for the Evangelical Oberpfarr- und Domkirche (English analogously: Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church, literally Supreme Parish and Cathedral Church) in Berlin, Germany. It is the parish church of the Evangelical congregation Gemeinde der Oberpfarr- und Domkirche zu Berlin, a member of the umbrella organisation Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia. Its present building is located on Museum Island in the Mitte borough. The Berlin Cathedral had never been a cathedral in the actual sense of that term since it has never been the seat of a bishop. The bishop of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg (under this name 1945-2003) is based in St. Mary's Church, Berlin, and Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. St. Hedwig's Cathedral serves as seat of Berlin's Roman Catholic Metropolitan bishop. | |

| The Roussanou Monastery, also Agia Varvaras Roussanou Monastery, in Meteora is one of six active monasteries in the Meteora monastery complex in Greece. The monastery is dedicated to St. Barbara. The monastery was founded in 1545 by the brothers Joasaph and Maximos of Ioannina on the site of an earlier church. In 1614, the monastery became an auxiliary of Varlaam Monastery. For two centuries before World War II, Roussanou Monastery was in disrepair. In 1940, during the German occupation, the monastery was plundered by the Germans. Following the war, the monastery was repaired by an archaeological service and, since 1988, it has been occupied by a community of nuns. Today, entry to the monastery is over a small bridge from another pinnacle. | |
