| The New World is a 2005 Academy Award-nominated film directed by Terrence Malick. It is a historical adventure set during the founding of the Jamestown, Virginia settlement and inspired by the historical figures Captain John Smith (Colin Farrell) and Pocahontas (Q'Orianka Kilcher). Malick's film selectively blends recorded history with popular lore. It broadly follows the known life of Pocahontas, from her youth in the Powhatan village, to a period spent with the English settlers in Jamestown, her marriage to John Rolfe, her journey to London and early death from pneumonia. However, Malick diverges from available evidence in favor of the literary tradition that Pocahontas fell in love with John Smith. I was very impressed with Q'Orianka Kilcher. She was 14, and playing guitar on the streets of Santa Monica, California (a part of LA), when she was chosen for the female lead in this movie... She was the main attraction for me in the movie. This girl played the part of innocence beautifully. I was enjoying watching her. This movie is a historical drama, but I feel like the history aspect is merely a backdrop for the Terrence Malick play. In his production, the flowing waters and the forest canopy are the actors, and the gentle reflections of troubled minds are the words. Recently Q'Orianka Kilcher won the 2006 Alma Award for Outstanding Actress in a Film for The New World. | |

| During the holidays i watched really MANY movies... At last i saw Memoirs of a Geisha...heard a lot of it so decided to make my own opinion..really not a bad one i think.. the story itself is very touching and moreover i do love happy ends and the costumes (this things always attract me!) are really amazing..beautiful fairy tale Then i watched a recent great hit in Russia, Ostrov (An Island), by Pavel Lungin. I should say it is one of such movies which are too rare nowadays ...its a masterpiece! Maybe its too Russian but anyone who ever thought of their soul, faith and life will understand it...dont know what else to say | |

| @ Owlet: Thanks a lot for the great introduction into this movie and especially about the heroine . It's seems to be a really interesting movie . One of my favourite movies from 2006 was also Memoirs of the Geisha. I love several phrases of the movie (I even bought the DVD and have watched it 10 times so far, I think (not much for a movie freak, as I am - have seen DDLJ probably about 20 times?? *hihi*). My phrases are (dunno the 100% right one): Your sister is like wood. You are like water. It is able to assimilate and it finds a way even if it is enclosed. Then I love the moment when you see the train crossing the picture and the old lady (narrater - Sayuri) is telling: "This story should have never been told...". It's really touching . And then I also like the scene when Sayuri / Chio is giving the tissue of her loved one to the wind. Great one! I also love the scene in the bathroom where Mameha is explaining Chio how to attract a man only with showing your wrist... Of course I also love the very end . I think I nearly cried... | |

| I saw an action movie by the lead actress of Geisha, Ziyi Zhang...its called House of Flying Daggers. Its totally focussed on her..her performance...martial arts...skills...kind of tailor made for her. The movie is shot in very beautiful locations and very nice costumes too.
I also watched Eragon. It released a month back I guess...it is the story of dragon riders and dragons. This story was written by a teenager Christopher Paolini.
