| Eagles can mate (Copulate) year around. The male and female briefly press their cloacae, called a Cloacal Kiss, to transfer sperm to the female. Most copulations happen away from the nesting site. Copulation does not mean egg laying, even though the female tends to solicit copulations more often when she is close to egg laying.
In this region, Jackie lays eggs between January and March.
It is believed that sperm can be stored in the oviduct for about 2 weeks. If successful, copulation may be enough to fertilize the whole clutch of 2-4 eggs. It takes about 2 days for an egg to be laid after ovulation. Bald eagle eggs are laid 3-5 days apart.
During the egg laying season, the female goes through a few periods of fertility which are about a month apart. Period of fertility lasts about 2 weeks. That allows them to lay replacement clutches, if all eggs are lost early on. | |
