With the Perseid Meteor shower at it's peak, a meteor is seen shooting through the early morning sky behind the nest!

4-18-19 Big Bear Eagles ~Breakfast With Mom & Dad, Spectacular Close Ups!

Jackie is feeding the twins when Shadow flies in. Shadow is closely observing so he can be the best dad possible. He comes close and takes a few pieces of fish that dropped by the eaglets. He seems to want to participate in the feedings but is reluctant still. Shadow decides it's time for brooding as he interrupts the feeding, nestling down as Jackie is still anxious to feed. It just takes time being this is all new to him. It won't be long and he'll be in there feeding like a pro!

Welcome to the Big Bear Bald Eagle Nest at Big Bear Lake in Big Bear Valley

The 15-mile long Big Bear Valley, with its beautiful lake, sits inside the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California.

This nest is in the San Bernardino National Forest land. It has been in active use since the fall of 2013. The surrounding area is closed to the public during nesting season to protect the eagles—bald eagles have been known to abandon nests when disturbed by humans.
Historically, bald eagles only wintered in Big Bear Valley to find sources of food (waterfowl and fish) not available in the frozen lakes further north. Recently, however, a pair took up year-round residence. In 2012 the “first in recorded history” bald eagle chick was hatched in Big Bear Valley. She was successfully raised to fledge.

What a great visit today with Shadow and Mrs BB at the nest! Several things stood out to me - you can really see their deepening bond & connection as a couple. Shadow is attentive - preening Mrs head feathers and gently nipping her beak several times. The most exciting part of their visit I want you to pay special attention to is at the 9:11 mark - Mrs begins her vocals which signal a pre-mating response in Shadow. Watch his response, he turns around and is excited, he ruffles his feathers which is a sign of arousal and wants to mount her - she assumes the submissive position with a bowed head. That branch is not conducive to mating - but this tells me that Shadow and Mrs BB are probably mating off the nest. We may still have little Shadows!
Mrs BB lays int he snow covered nest a couple of times tonight - she was not comfortable and it must have been very cold. She had a full crop tonight as well. Shadow brings in a double stick delivery today - quite impressive on how fast he got the sticks and returned! I am happy that this eagle couple has come this far in their new relationship! Mrs BB has definitely mellowed with Shadow as her mate! Thank you for watching!
